More than 2000 Gather to Explore the Metaphysical Side of Life
By Susannah Bryan
“
Turn off your phones, please.” Psychic Jody Rowe Staley told those
gathered before her Sunday, many hoping to receive messages from Spirit
Guides and loved ones who have passed on. “They’re going
to be calling in, but I don’t think they’re going to be
using the phone.”
As the laughs gave way to silence, Staley began a prayer invoking the
wisdom of the spirit world. “We call on the assembly of master
teachers, angels, guardians, and spirit guides,” she said in a
soothing voice.
Outside, dozens of curiosity seekers found a metaphysical smorgasbord
awaiting at the Body, Mind, & Spirit Expo, held for the fourth year
at the Broward County Convention Center. Those hunting for a tarot card
reading or a spiritual coach found plenty to choose from, with more
than 50 speakers touching on topics ranging from past lives to human
energy fields and the joys of proper nutrition.
More than 2000 people paid $15 apiece to attend the all day event, according
to the organizer Susan Wood, publisher and editor of Natural Awakenings
magazine. “We have people talking about spiritually and health,” Wood
said. “We have people talking about tantric sex and new technologies
for healing.”
Indeed it was a day for the New Age, the conference was room bustling
with healers and hypnotists, feng shui experts and psychics. One booth
offered the curious a snapshot of their own aura, while acupuncturists
gave Chinese pulse reading and massage therapists worked on achy, breaky
backs.
Browsing the booths, Miami Beach resident Donna Greifer listened in
on a conversation between a friend and Jon Gordon, author of Become
AN Energy Addict. Fort Lauderdale resident Gerald Williams came to learn
about meditation. “I was guided here,” he said, telling
how he saw the event featured in Natural Awakenings. “I’m
interested in spiritual healing”
Others came for validation that things were happening for a reason,
that they were on the right path, that someone out there was meant just
for them. Coral Springs resident Cara Roberts had one burning question
for Staley, the psychic from Jamaica who promised her audiences messages
from the spirit world. “When am I going to get married?” Roberts
asked as more than 50 people looked on. “Marriage is much closer
than you think,” Staley answered as “ooohs“ reverberated
through the room. “You will be connecting with someone who will
make a very good husband. I say June or July.” Psychic Michelle
Whitedove, in her lecture titled She Sees Dead People, assured listeners
that loved ones really do communicate with us from the other side. “We
never really die, but move on to another dimension to continue our soul’s
evolution, “ said Whitedove, author of She Talks With Angels.
“
There are many places that we incarnate besides earth,” she said, “I
consider Earth to be like a school. It’s a trip. And for some
of us it is a bad vacation,” she said, eliciting chuckles.
One man asked whether evil spirits exist. Whitedove answered carefully. “Evil,
in this world, is the opposite of light. What evil means to you will
be different to the person next to you. To them, it might be killing
someone. To you it might be telling a lie. To God, it’s not about
right or wrong. It is about love and light versus fear and darkness.”
